Three Free Vintage Slippers & Scuffs Crochet Patterns

When I found this copy of Star Gift Book, Book No. 31, © 1944 American Thread Company, I squealed with delight & thought of all of you. Just look at these fabulous vintage footwear you can crochet! (Or is that knit? It says "crochet hook" so I'll stick with crochet. I don't do either -- yet.)

(Sorry about the torn cover which affects the last bit of instructions... But you know how it is buying vintage; conditions are what they are.)

So, I went out and spent about $35 for the thread to make these (note: only the slippers have the full pattern on the page). It was not too hard to find, except that to get it in the color I wanted (soft pink) I had to buy a bunch of small skeins, instead of balls, which made the materials pricey.

Since I have a size 11 foot, I opted for the "large" size. After finishing the first piece for the sole, I had to rip it out and start over. I'm not quite sure what went wrong, but the sole was about 6 inches longer than my foot, and much, much narrower. I tried blocking, but there isn't much play, so that didn't work. I'm trying to decide whether it's worth starting over. Not knowing whether the pattern will turn out took the wind out of my sails.

I'm going to put the materials in my "abandoned" pile for now, and move on to a baby afghan for my friend who is expecting.

Hi Misty,

Sorry the pattern was problematic for you :( As I can't crochet, I can't be of any help either. Perhaps another reader who can will be so kind...

Maybe by the time you are done with your baby afghan you can try again?

PS I did just double check the pattern page (both the scan & the physical page) and what's in this post is the complete set of instructions for each of the three slippers/scuffs as published.
